Drug delivery efficacy and anti-diabetic potential of cyclodextrin against hyperglycemia

The article for the first time summarizes the existing evidences on the effectiveness of CD-based micro/nano-carriers to deliver anti-diabetic molecules through oral, nasal, and subcutaneous routes and the efficacy of CD-based dietary supplement in managing postprandial glycemia. Different types of CDs and its derivatives have been used for preparing varieties of micro/nano-carriers to deliver diverse anti-diabetic molecules, including insulin, GLP-1, α-lipoic acid, bilirubin etc. to reduce hyperglycemia. Furthermore, numerous studies demonstrated the positive role of different types of CD in inhibiting the activities of carbohydrate digestive enzymes followed by delaying the starch digestion and thereby lowering the postprandial glycemic response.
