Innovative Titanium Coatings for Enhanced Dental Implants

Researchers from Brazil and Switzerland developed a multifunctional coating for titanium dental implants that combines tetracycline complexed with anionic βCD and a pH-responsive polymer film. In a rat model using polymicrobial biofilms from patients with peri-implantitis, the coating produced a sustained reduction of more than 99.9% in viable bacteria while minimizing inflammation. It also increased collagen deposition, connective-tissue maturation, and markers of extracellular matrix remodeling, highlighting the potential of CD-based implant coatings to simultaneously combat infection and promote soft-tissue healing.
