A multifunctional food packaging material (G-Eug-NPs-NF) based on gelatin nanofiber membranes (G-NF) containing eugenol nanoparticles (Eug-NPs) were prepared [1]. The Eug-NPs were fabricated through the electrostatic self-assembly by using two ionic polysaccharides chitosan and sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBECD). Compared with G-NF, the G-Eug-NPs-NF exhibited better antioxidant capacity, which positively correlated with Eug-IC concentration, up to 84.17%. In addition, the latter had a good inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and was more conducive to inhibit the growth of S. aureus. At the same time, the sustained release experiment showed that the incorporation of Eug-NPs in nanofiber membranes improved the sustained release ability of G-Eug-NPs-NF.

Isoliquiritigenin (ISL), apoorly soluble flavonoid with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, anticancer, antiplatelet aggregation, anti-angiogenic effect, and cytoprotective effects. It is the major bioactive constituent isolated from the food plants such as licorice, shallot, and bean sprouts. The water solubility of ISL rose from 13.6 μM to 4.05 mM by the inclusion of SBE-β-CD [2]. The antioxidant activities (IC50) of ISL-SBE-β-CD reached 42.2 μg/ml, which was significantly lower than that of ISL (60.5 μg/ml). Its stability in biological environments was also enhanced.

Inclusion complexation of glabridin (an isoflavane found in the root extract of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)) was studied [3]. The results showed that various CDs could form 1:1 inclusion complexes with GLD, and 2-sulfobutyl-β-CD (2-SBE-β-CD) had a better capability to include GLD than other CDs and their derivatives. The cumulative dissolution rates of the GLD/2-SBE-β-CD inclusion complexes in gastric and intestinal fluid were significantly higher than that of GLD and its physical mixture with 2-SBE-β-CD. The GLD/2-SBE-β-CD inclusion complexes had significantly enhanced anti-proliferative activity on HepG-2 cells compared with GLD/H2O. The results of this study confirm that the superiority of 2-SBE-β-CD as a GLD carrier is expected to broaden the application of GLD in food, health products and other fields.
