Cyclodextrins in veterinary medicine (Part 2)

Posted by

In our previous post we talked about the “classical” usage of cyclodextrins in veterinary medicine. Now let’s see some non-usual approaches…

boritókép21.) An exciting cyclodextrin derivative, as vaccine adjuvant: sulfolipo-(beta)cyclodextrin (SLBCD)1 it is used for e.g. in Suvaxyn PCV™, that contains inactivated recombinant Porcine Circovirus type 1, expressing the Porcine Circovirus type 2 ORF2 protein. This vaccine is used for the active immunization of pigs over the age of 3 weeks against Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2). SLBCD is an uncommon adjuvant, it has a low water solubility (because of the lauryl side-chains).

2.) Cryopreservation. Cholesterol-loaded cyclodextrins can improve cryosurvival of animal sperms. When preloaded with cholesterol cyclodextrins stimulate the insertion of cholesterol into the sperm membrane. Also, cholesterol-loaded cyclodextrins improve quality of stallion spermatozoa2,3.

3.) Methane emission mitigation in ruminants. The β-cyclodextrin complex with diallyl maleate and iodopropane reduced the methane production significantly (16-74% in vitro and nearly 20% in vivo in steers)4,5. On the other hand, caprylic acid/ β-cyclodextrin complex was found to mitigate methane emissions without reducing energy intake in in vivo experiments in diluted ruminal fluid but the in vivo results in heifers did not show significant difference compared to control, so further studies are needed before application6.

4.) Essential oils and cyclodextrins.  Essential oils hold promise as feed additives in ruminant nutrition to improve feed efficiency and control the spread of pathogens in livestock. Microencapsulation of essential oils with β-cyclodextrins helps in improving the stability and efficacy of essential oils7.

These examples were just illustrations, how widely cyclodextrins can be used in veterinary medication.
