Researchers from New Zealand and the United States developed a copper-doped CD-based metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) to create a self-disinfecting food-contact coating. The CD framework stabilized chlorophyllin, boosted light-triggered reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by approximately 140-fold, and was incorporated into a biodegradable microporous PLA coating that achieved a >99.99% reduction of both Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus cereus after just 30 minutes of red LED exposure. The work demonstrates how CD-based materials can enable durable, light-activated antimicrobial surfaces with promising applications in food safety and spoilage prevention.
