A Game-Changing One-Step Process
Classical extraction involves multiple steps, including solvent preparation, extraction, and purification. The new one-step process integrates solvent preparation and extraction by microwave irradiation in a single step. This eliminates the need for purification, reducing energy consumption and waste generation.

Supramolecular Deep Eutectic Solvents in Action
Supramolecular deep eutectic solvents (SUPRADES) are a subclass of deep eutectic solvents based on cyclodextrins. They have recently received particular attention in the field of extraction. Interestingly, the use of well-designed cyclodextrin-based solvents results in stable and ready-to-use microencapsulated extracts that can be incorporated directly into the final product without purification or pre-formulation
One-Step Microwave-Assisted Extraction
The innovative process combines solvent formation and extraction in a single step using microwave irradiation. Under optimal conditions (15 minutes at 80°C) the method achieves high yields of antioxidants and polyphenols comparable to traditional Soxhlet extraction, while reducing time, energy and solvent consumption. Furthermore, due to the stabilization and biocompatibility of the solvent components, mainly cyclodextrins, the extract obtained can be used directly in the final formulation. Thus, the process developed here results in excellent environmental performance indicators due to reduced operating units and energy consumption, paving the way for a more sustainable future in extraction for the cosmetics and food industries.
