Enhancing Sunscreens: HPβCD Improves Ferulic Acid Efficacy

Researchers from Brazil 🇧🇷 developed a HPβCD-based system to improve the stability, safety, and antioxidant activity of ferulic acid for topical applications. Compared with free ferulic acid, the CD-containing system demonstrated 20-fold greater cellular safety and approximately 8x greater antioxidant efficiency, while also providing a more controlled release profile. When incorporated into sunscreen formulations, it increased sun protection even when UV filters were reduced by 50%, highlighting the potential of CD-based systems to improve the performance of antioxidant and sunscreen formulations.

Line graph showing the amount released (in micrograms per square centimeter) over time (in hours) for four different formulations labeled F1, F2, F7, and F8.

In vitro release profiles of FA (Ferulic acid) from formulations F1, F2, F7, and F8.
F1: formulation with FA and sunscreens (5% butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane and 10% ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate); F2: formulation with CF (Cicloferulic®) and sunscreens (5% butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane and 10% ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate); F7: formulation with FA and no sunscreens; F8: formulation with CF and no sunscreens.
Cicloferulic® was prepared by mixig FA and HPβ-CD in a 1:1 molar ratio, with the subsequent addition of PVP K30 polymer (w/w). After homogenization of the powders, an ethanol: water solution was added until a paste formed, which was then dried.
