Cardiovascular diseases are disorders that compromise the heart and circulatory systems. Ischemic heart disease is one of the causes of death worldwide. The search for new pharmacotherapies for ischemic heart disease remains a strategy for identifying drugs with increased pharmacological profiles, more potent, and safer with minor side effects. Therefore, this review aims to evaluate patents that have developed innovative therapeutic approaches and alternatives to improve cardiovascular drug properties upon complexation with cyclodextrins. It examined the development of various patents regarding cyclodextrin inclusion complexes for improving cardiovascular drugs for ischemic heart disease therapy. Most cyclodextrin complexes are composed of herbal or traditional Chinese medicines, which have been more effective in preventing the problems associated with ischemic heart disease. However, extensive research must be developed to establish their validity by employing different molecular and cellular targets and monitoring various biomarkers. Nevertheless, cyclodextrins and their derivatives may be an essential tool to create formulations with existing cardiovascular drugs, improving their efficiency in cardiovascular disease treatment.
All the selected patents proposed inclusion complexes composed of β-CD and HP-β-CD.
Most patents were filed by China (CN) with 23 documents, whereas Japan (JP), the Republic of Korea (KR), and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) had one patent each.
A brief search was carried by the authors out in the ClinicalTrials database to recognize the panorama of clinical trials involving the topic of this review. The search was developed using the descriptors “cardiovascular disease” and “cyclodextrin”, which resulted in five clinical trials. Among these, only one referred to the use of CDs for the cardiovascular disease treatments. This study used α-CD orally to reduce cholesterol (NCT01131299), thus it aimed the research at diseases, such as atherosclerosis.
