Pine oil is the essential oil obtained by steam distillation of needles and other parts of pines containing typical components (alpha-terpinol and other cyclic terpene alcohols) characterizing the smell of Christmas tree. It is used as disinfectant, sanitizer, microbicide, virucide and insecticide.
Complezation aimes at stabilization of the highly volatile components.
In 1988, Szente et al. applied for a patent on pharmaceutical inhalants and air scenting compositions containing active-agent/CD complexes (PCT INT. APPL. WO 88 08304, 03.11.1988) with an example on pine oil/BCD complex. After a large number of studies on the chiral separation of the components by using CD-modified GC columns, Wong et al. investigated pine oil as insect repellent for food packaging (J. Agric. Food Chem. 2005, 53(11), 4633-4636).
