Posted by A Russian startup company, Vetstem, located at Skolkovo, Moscow successfully markets an antiviral composition for the treatment of feline infectious peritonitis (caused by certain strains of feline coronavirus) under brand name Ipecon®. The product recently received a registration certificate. The first batch of the drug has been on sale in July 2024.
The drug contains a patented composition consisting of the main active ingredient (a nucleoside analogue) Vefinavir (VS-121354) and Taurin. The dosage form is lyophilisate for preparation of injection solution. The medicinal product consists of a vial with the lyophilisate and also a vial with solvent.
One vial of lyophilisate contains the following active ingredients: 80 mg of nucleoside analogue VS-121354 and 180 mg of taurine, as well as excipients: betadex sulfobutylether sodium (2.16 g), hydrochloric acid solution 10 M qs (to adjust pH). One vial of solvent for Ipecon® contains 4 ml water for injection. The volume of the finished solution of the drug after adding the entire volume of solvent to the lyophilisate is 5 ml.
The mechanism of action of the main component is aimed at inhibiting RNA synthesis of the infectious peritonitis virus, elimination of the pathogen and complete recovery of the animal. In addition to the main active ingredient, the drug also contains taurin – an essential amino acid for cats, which normalizes various vital processes and maintains the necessary level of immunity.
Ipecon® is produced in the facility of a Russian production site (DECO-PHARM).
One of the advantages of Ipecon® is the reduced stress for animals upon application, since the pH value of the finished solution of Ipecon® is closer to neutral, compared to comparison drugs. In addition, the required volume of the introduced solution is smaller due to the increased specific content of active substances.
