Lajos Szente, Ph.D., D.Sc., one of the founders and former CEO (now Scientific Advisor) of CycloLab at the company and professor at the Debrecen University held his inaugural lecture on 13th September in the main hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences building on the occasion that he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Szente and his colleagues at CycloLab achieved remarkable results on the cyclodextrin research and application especially in the pharmaceutical field. After the historical overview of the Hungarian cyclodextrin research Prof. Szente showed several examples on how his group contributed to the development of new, now already marketed drug products. One of his main achievement was the recognition of the potential of cyclodextrins in detoxification and proved their artificial receptor function.

His group played a significant role in the development and approval of hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin and sulfobutyl beta-cyclodextrin as pharmaceutical excipients for solubilizing poorly soluble drugs. These two cyclodextrin derivatives have been incorporated in over 50 drug formulations now on the market.
