An interesting patent application has been published disclosing CD-cellobiose or CD-lactose polymer for drug delivery targeted to the colon with the following abstract.
The invention provides a colonic microbiota responsive polymer characterized in that it is prepared by the polymerization of a response monomer and a linking monomer, wherein the response monomer is a cellobiose with a beta-(1,4)-glucoside bond or/and a lactose with a beta-galactoside bond; the linking monomer is a monomer that reacts with the hydroxyl group of the response monomer to form an ester or ether directly or by a crosslinking agent. The invention also provides a method for preparation of a colonic microbiota responsive polymer, a degradable film based on the polymer and a preparation method thereof. By means of the characteristics that beta-(1,4)-glucoside bond provided by cellobiose or/and beta-galactoside bond provided by lactose monomer unit in the polymer can specifically respond to the high abundance of microbiotas (beta-glucosidase or/and beta-galactosidase) in the colon to specifically degrade in the colon, a colon-targeted delivery system for diagnosis and treatment of colon diseases is constructed.
